Johann Horneburg (also Johann VIII of Lebus ; † June 16, 1555 in Storkow , Diocese of Lebus ) was the last Catholic bishop of Lebus from 1552 to 1555.

Life

Johann Horneburg came from Braunschweig . He studied in Wittenberg , Leipzig and Bologna and earned his doctor of law and canon law . In 1520 he was designated as such.

In 1535 he was first mentioned in the service of Archbishop Albrecht of Mainz and Magdeburg , and in 1535 as a canon in Halberstadt . In 1543 he also received a salary from Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg .

In 1550 Johannes Horneburg was provost of the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery , the St. Bonifatius and Mauritius Monastery in Halberstadt and the collegiate monasteries in Tangermünde and Walbeck as well as canons in Hildesheim , Merseburg , Minden and Naumburg .

In April or May 1551 he was elected by the cathedral chapter as the new bishop of Lebus after the elector could not get any of his sons to be candidates. At that time, the cathedral monastery of Lebus owned the last major secular territory in the Mark Brandenburg that had not yet converted to the Reformation confession, which is why the pressure from the elector and margrave Johann der Neumark was considerable.

John's election was confirmed by the Pope on October 5 and on April 10, 1552 by the ordination of Archbishop Nicholas III. carried out by Gniezno . Soon afterwards he clearly communicated his Catholic position in an exchange of letters with the elector.

Johann nevertheless officiated as imperial prince without any formal restrictions. In 1552 he supported the university in Frankfurt during a plague epidemic. In 1554 Bishop Johann traveled to the Kaiser to confirm the endangered land of Beeskow and Storkow.

He died on June 16, 1555 in the Bishop's Palace in Storkow. His grave is unknown.

Bishop Johann Horneburg was considered a learned personality and supporter of the sciences. Even the reformer Philipp Melanchthon described him as a wise man and his patron. Johann Horneburg owned a library with nearly 500 books and numerous manuscripts in Storkow Castle.

After his death, the Brandenburg elector was able to appoint his grandson Joachim Friedrich as the new bishop and in 1557 carry out the Reformation in the monastery territory of Lebus.
