Milan Křížek (born March 9, 1926 in Lišov , Czechoslovakia ; † February 15, 2018 in Budweis , Czech Republic ) was a Czech composer , music teacher and violist .

Life

After graduating from the grammar school in Tábor (1937–1945), he studied musicology, music education and history at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague (1946–1951). Privately, he studied composition under Jaroslav Řídký (1946–1950). In 1959 he passed the state examination in violin. In 1971 Křížek became a doctor of philosophy at the Palacký University in Olomouc . His postgraduate research was carried out externally at the Institute of Musicology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences (1966–1972; honored as a candidate of science in 1975).

After graduating, he taught music education at the Pedagogical Gymnasium in Znojmo (1950–1951). After his military service he moved to Ceske Budejovice , where he taught at the Music Academy (1953-1956), then at the Pedagogical School (1956-1958). Among other things, he contributed to the popularization of music. In 1959 he became an assistant professor at the Institute for Music in the Faculty of Education. In 1991 the faculty became part of the newly founded University of South Bohemia in Budweis . Until his retirement in 1986 he worked at the Institute for Music. After the political change in 1989 he was appointed lecturer in 1990.

From 1990 to 2001 Křížek taught music theory and composition at the Music Academy in Budweis. Until 1992 he was also active as a violinist in the orchestra of the Opera of the South Bohemian Theater, in the South Bohemian Philharmonic and in several other chamber ensembles.

Křížek's compositions have their roots in neoclassicism . In his later works he experimented with new composition techniques. These works tend to synthesize the means of modern musical language. The South Bohemian Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra has premiered Variations on a Theme by Alban Berg (1985), Concerto for Orchestra (1988), Concerto for 14 String Instruments (1998) and other works. A selection of his works is often recorded during the Days for New Music in Prague: Sonata for solo viola (1996), Sonatina danzante for flute and clarinet (2000), Seven Sequences for clarinet and percussion (2002), Capriccio for soprano, flute , Viola and percussion on verses by Konstantin Biebl (2005), Largo desolato for violin, viola and violoncello (2010) and Collage IV 3 violoncellos (2012).

His compositions are stored in the archives of the Czech Music Fund, in the South Bohemian Museum, in the archives of the South Bohemian Philharmonic and at the Conservatory in Budweis.
