Mile End (London)
Mile End is a neighborhood in the Tower Hamlets district of London in the East End of London. The district dates back to a medieval village located exactly a mile from Aldgate in the City of London on the road to Colchester .
history
The origin of the village was on the Mile End Road . There were a few houses along this. Until the 17th century, however, this was a well-known and well-used meeting place for the London population. The city militia practiced here, and markets and shows took place in the fields on Mile End Road. Mile End is historically significant, as the meeting between the English king and Wat Tyler took place here during the peasant uprising in the 14th century . It was only with the population growth in the early modern period that land speculators and home builders began to exploit the fields of Mile End. The city expanded from Spitalfields . Originally a rural place where rich Londoners like James Cookbuilt their homes, the district saw the social development of the East End and became a place of residence for workers and immigrants. Mile End came to the City of London in 1855 and was part of the Stepney district until its dissolution . The historic Mile End area has been protected as the Stepney Green Conservation Area since 1973 . Its area extends mainly to the streets Mile End Road and Stepney Green.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Mile End had a large Jewish population, of which several Jewish cemeteries still testify today. The former constituency of the British House of Commons, Mile End, was one of only two constituencies in England in which a Communist won a direct seat. The first V-1 missile to be shot at London by the Germans during World War II hit Mile End. In the 1960s, this was one of the strongholds of the developing hooligan scene in football. The Mile End Gang attended East End club West Ham United games and fought with other gangs in east London during the week. It is now one of the UK's districts with the highest percentage of immigrants , especially people from Bangladesh , Pakistan and Somalia . A member of the successor group Bethnal Green and Bow, previously a bastion of the Labor Party , was from 2005 to 2010 with George Galloway for Respect - The Unity Coalition, a member of parliament who positioned himself on the left of the established party spectrum and above all addressed the numerous Muslim voters.
Infrastructure
The Mile End Underground Station , Mile End Park and Mile End Stadium are in the district . The University of London's Queen Mary College has part of its teaching buildings and dormitories here. The Mile End Road is an ancient main road leading from the City of London to Mile End and then further east.
Culture
The place is known in pop culture for a song by the group Pulp , which appears on the soundtrack to the film Trainspotting . In terms of content, it is about a group of squatters occupying a decayed 15-story apartment building from the 1970s. The videos for the songs Confusion Girl by Frankmusik and for the song Heart Skips a Beat were made in Mile End Park.
