The Syriac Military Council ( Aramaic ܡܘܬܒܐ ܦܘܠܚܝܐ ܣܘܪܝܝܐ Mawtbo Folhoyo Suryoyo , 'Abbreviation MFS , Arabic المجلس العسكري السرياني, DMG al-mağlis al-ʿaskarī as-siryānī , English Syriac Military Council ) is a military organization of the Christian Assyrian-Aramaeans in Syria .
Foundation and goals
The founding of the organization was announced on January 8, 2013. According to the MFS, the aim of the organization is to stand up for the national rights of the Assyrian-Aramaic people and to defend their settlement areas. The MFS operates mainly in areas populated by the Assyrian-Aramaic Christian minority, especially in the province of al-Hasakah .
On December 16, 2013, the MFS announced the establishment of a new military academy called "Martyrs Abgar". On December 24, 2013, the MFS, together with the People's Defense Units (YPG) , succeeded in retaking the village of Gharduka in northeast Syria, which was occupied by the al-Nusra Front . The MFS took part in various YPG offensives against jihadist groups from the al-Nusra Front, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Ahrar al-Sham , including a YPG offensive that took place on December 26, 2013 in Tal Hamis and the surrounding area was started on February 27, 2015, the city was recaptured by fighters from the Kurdish People's Defense Units (YPG) and fighters from the Assyrian Military Council (MFS) from IS. On January 8, 2014, the MFS announced that it had joined the ranks of the YPG. In October 2015, the Assyrian Military Council and other military groups such as the YPG and the Arab al-Sanadid Brigades joined forces to form the Syrian Democratic Forces .
On January 28, 2018, Kino Gabriel, the spokesman for the Assyrian Military Council and now also the spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), declared that the Assyrian fighters will fight alongside the People's Defense Units (YPG / YPJ) against the Turkish invaders . Kino Gabriel was replaced by Abgar David as spokesman for the Assyrian Military Council due to his new post at the SDF, who also spoke out in favor of active measures against the Turkish aggression in Syria.
