Location of Millwall Dock in Greater London |
The Millwall Dock is a dock in Millwall south of Canary Wharf on the Isle of Dogs in London .
history
Millwall Dock was built by John Aird & Co. to plans by Sir John Fowler and opened in 1868.
The harbor basin is L-shaped, with the outer harbor basin extending in an east-west direction and the inner harbor basin running from its eastern end to the north. It originally had 14 hectares of water and 81 hectares of land. The western end of the Outer Harbor Basin was originally connected to the Thames at Millwall by a 24 m wide canal . The excavation of the harbor basin formed a piece of wasteland called Mudchute . A floating dock for ship repairs was built in the SE corner of the outer harbor basin (one of six originally planned) and was later extended to 169 m.
As part of the restructuring after the takeover by the Port of London Authority in the 1920s, the northern end of the inner harbor basin was connected to the West India Docks by the Millwall Passage and the direct connection to the Thames was filled.
The basin was primarily used for unloading timber and grain loads, a trade that was later relocated downstream to Tilbury Port when a large grain terminal was built there in the 1960s. A McDougall’s flour mill on the south side of the outer harbor basin was demolished in 1980.
The area today
Millwall Dock is almost in the middle of the Isle of Dogs , just south of the converted Canary Wharf shopping mile.
A large plot of land on the north side of the Outer Harbor Basin is occupied by the West Ferry Printing Works , the largest newspaper printing plant in Western Europe, which was built in 1984–1986. Millwall Dock is now a high-rise business park that is home to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMBs) for technical products, law firms and financial services companies.
Residential buildings and elegant apartment blocks were also built there . The Clippers Quay residential area is located on the former dry dock, while the Mill Quay residential area is located on the site of the old mill. The difference between the newly created business and residential areas and the adjoining old buildings.
The Docklands Sailing and Watersports Center is located at the very west end of the harbor basin, where it was originally connected to the Thames. It was built in 1989 by the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) and Sports Council for £ 1.2m.
The boat stunts for the James Bond film The World Is Not Enough were carried out in this harbor basin in 1999 .
There are three Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations accessible from Millwall Dock : Mudchute , Crossharbour and South Quay .
