Milner's kindergarten

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Milner's Kindergarten is the informal name given to an influential political grouping of Britain , in the period between the Second Boer War and the founding of the Union of South Africa in the Public Service of South Africa under High Commissioner Alfred Lord Milner worked.

Importance of grouping

The personalities of "Milner's Kindergarten" were advocates of the South African Union and, ultimately, of far-reaching reform, which should give the colonies a greater say in the British Commonwealth of Nations. After Milner's retirement, most of them continued to work under his successor William Palmer, 2nd Earl of Selborne . Many of them achieved a socio-political significance as a result of the experience they had at Milner, which is reminiscent of the term “ kindergarten ”.

Key figures in this circle were:

All members of the group also became members of the Royal Institute of International Affairs, founded in 1920 .

Many of these men formed an association known as the Round Table Movement even after their service in South Africa . The published by this association journal The Round Table Journal served to spread the idea of a "Federated Union" (Federated Union) instead of the British Empire . Philip Kerr and Lionel Curtis were also joint leaders in 1938 when the Federal Union was founded , which advocated world federalism .

The spirit of Milner's Kindergarten is evident in the obituary for Patrick Duncan in The Round Table Journal's September issue :

“Duncan became the doyen of the band of brothers, Milner's young men, who were nicknamed… The Kindergarten, then in the first flush of youthful enthusiasm. It is a fast aging and dwindling band now; but it has played a part in the Union of South Africa colonies, and it is responsible for the foundation and conduct of The Round Table. For forty years and more, so far as the vicissitudes of life have allowed, it has kept together; and always, while looking up to Lord Milner and to his successor in South Africa, the late Lord Selborne, as its political Chief, has revered Patrick Duncan as the Captain of the band. Remarks

  1. According to Carroll Quigley , he is said to have led the group from 1955 to 1963.
  2. Translation: Duncan became the spokesman for the Brotherhood of Milner's young men who, in the first exuberance of youthful enthusiasm, were nicknamed "The Kindergarten". It is now an aging and dwindling group; but she has played a role in the South African Union and she is responsible for establishing and running the round table. For more than forty years - as far as the whims of life had allowed - she held together; and while they considered Lord Milner and his successor in South Africa, the late Lord Selborne, as their political role model, the revered Patrick Duncan was always the leader of the group.
