Milton Feng

Milton Feng (* 1950 in Taiwan ) is an American electrical engineer. He is a professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).

Feng received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1973 and his master's degree in electrical engineering from UIUC in 1976, where he received his PhD in 1979 with Gregory Stillman. He was then in the Gallium Arsenide Group at the Torrance Research Center of Hughes Aircraft Company , where he developed MESFETs and MMICs with low consumption and noise for radar applications in 1983 . In 1983 he demonstrated the first GaAs amplifiers at 60 GHz. From 1984 to 1986 he was at Ford Microelectronics in Colorado Springs, where he developed integrated circuits for RAM memories and gate arrays, and from 1991 he was a professor at the UIUC.

He developed very fast transistors, so-called pseudomorphic HBTs (PHBT), and with such a PHBT made of indium phosphide, he reached over 800 GHz, which pushed transistor development towards the terahertz range.

He is co-inventor (2004) of the transistor laser (TL) with Nick Holonyak , a component that has both an electrical transistor signal and laser operation at the same time (quantum well-based light emitting transistor, QWLET), after previously using a light-emitting transistor ( LET) and then hung a quantum well on it.

He has published over 200 papers and holds 18 patents (2013).

He is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and the IEEE . In 2013 he received the RW Wood Prize .
