Mimobdella buettikoferi is the name of a type of large, blind, country living leech from the family of Salifidae in the subordination of Schlundegel , the particular earthworms eating and on the island of Borneo is home.

features

Mimobdella buettikoferi has a cylindrical body up to 50 cm long, flattened at the rear end, with a shape strongly reminiscent of earthworms and a coral-red color. A specimen examined by Raphaël Blanchard was 16.5 cm long and 1.1 cm wide. Eyes cannot be recognized after Blanchard's description. In contrast to some Salifa species or other outwardly very similar leeches such as Gastrostomobdella monticola , the adult Mimobdella buettikoferi have no gastropore, i.e. no ventral slit behind the female genital opening . The externally not visible segments have 10 outer rings per segment in the middle section of the body. There are more than 6 outer ringlets between the male and female genitals of the hermaphrodite animals. The straight, tubular pharynx of the leech has neither jaw-like structures - i.e. no pseudognaths - nor stilettos.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

Mimobdella buettikoferi lives on the forest floor of the mountain forests of the Kinabalu in the Malaysian province of Sabah on the island of Borneo , where it is often found in March and generally after rainfall at altitudes of around 2500 to 3000 meters above sea level. It digs through the ground in search of prey, most of which consists of earthworms , including the giant earthworm Pheretima darnleiensis , which is swallowed with the help of the muscular pharynx.

Species name

Raphaël Blanchard chose the generic name Mimobdella after the Greek μῖμος mîmos "actor, imitator" and Greek βδέλλα bdélla " leech ". The species Mimobdella buettikoferi was named by Blanchard when it was first described in 1897 after the naturalist Johann Büttikofer , who had collected the holotype .
