Johann Büttikofer

Johann Büttikofer (born August 9, 1850 in Ranflüh , † June 24, 1927 in Bern ) was a Swiss zoologist .

After studying biology at the University of Bern , he found a job at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden in 1879 and was its curator from 1884 to 1897 . He made two trips to Liberia , the first from 1879 to 1882 and the second from 1886 to 1887. From 1893 to 1894 he accompanied Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis' expedition to the interior of Borneo . Between 1897 and 1924 he was director of the Zoological Gardens of Rotterdam , and his last years he spent in Bern. Before Walter Bolz, a private lecturer in zoology in Bern, left for his research trip to Liberia in May 1906, he visited Büttikofer in Rotterdam and received advice and letters of recommendation from him. Bolz was killed during the research trip.

In 1895 Büttikofer received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bern.
