Anton Willem Nieuwenhuis (born May 22, 1864 in Papendrecht , † September 21, 1953 in Leiden ) was a Dutch ethnologist .

Life

Anton Willem was the son of Arend Jan Nieuwenhuis (born May 17, 1837 in Deventer; † January 5, 1865 in Papendrecht) and Johanna Schneider (* around 1840; † January 8, 1926 in Leiden). He had attended the high school in Deventer and enrolled on September 28, 1883 at the University of Leiden to study medicine. On November 15, 1889, he obtained his medical diploma and obtained his doctorate in 1890 with the thesis on Haematoma Scroti at the Albert-Ludwigs-University of Freiburg as a doctor of medicine. He then joined the Dutch military, was appointed medical officer 2nd class on December 5, 1889, and was transferred to Batavia , Indonesia .

In February 1891 he was transferred to the island of Borneo . Here he got to know the culture and structure of the country and the people who live there. He also took part in research expeditions by the Society for the Promotion of Natural History Studies in the Dutch Colonies, and undertook medical and ethnological studies of the various Dayak population groups . After eleven and a half years he returned to the Netherlands, was promoted to medical officer 1st class on May 22, 1898 and began to write down his experiences in literature.

On January 14, 1904, he was appointed professor of the history, literature, antiquities, institutions, customs and traditions of the peoples of the Indian archipelago, which he did on May 4, 1904 with the introductory speech De levensvoorwaarden onder volken op hoogen en op lagen trap van Beschaving (German: The living conditions of lower peoples on high and low level of civilization ) took on. He became chairman of the Association for Tropical Medicine in Rotterdam-Leiden, a member of the Dutch Anthropological Association and, on June 6, 1902, a corresponding member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences . He also received further appointments to the learned societies of his time.

He also worked as an editor of the scientific journals International Archive for Ethnography , Janus and Tropisch Nederland . He was made a Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion , and in 1910 he became a 1st Class Knight of the Saxon Order of Albrecht . In 1919/20 he was rector of the Leiden University , for which he gave the speech De Mensch in de werkelijkheid, zijn kenleer in the Heidenschen godsdienst (German: Man in reality, his epistemology in pagan religion ) on February 8, 1920 . On September 17, 1934, at the age of 70, he retired from his professorship, but continues to work on ethnographic publications.

Nieuwenhuis married on June 4, 1902 in Deventer with the scientist Baroness Johanna Margarete Toni von Uexküll Güldenbandt (Gyllenband, Güldenband) (born January 19, 1873 in Kaunas / Lithuania, † January 4, 1970), the daughter of the baron and general Georg Reinhold Uexküll von Güldenbandt (* June 20, 1825 - August 18, 1890 in Riga) and his wife Marie Boehtlingk (* ​​March 19, 1830 in Riga; † 1881 ibid.).
