Mindauga's Bastys

Mindaugas Bastys (born January 29, 1965 in Joginiškiai , Šakiai district ) is a Lithuanian social democratic politician who was vice-president of the Seimas from 2016 to 2017 .

Life

His father was Juozas Bastys (1934-1995), an agricultural manager and politician, member of the Seimas.

After graduating from high school from 1972 to 1983 at the Kriūkai Middle School near Šakiai , Mindaugas Bastys graduated from the Lietuvos veterinarijos akademija in 1990 with a diploma in zootechnics . He wrote the dissertation in agronomy on the topic “Pluoštui auginamų linų pasėlio tankumo, derliaus at jo kokybės formavimas technologinėmis priemonėmis”. In 1990 he worked in the collective farm and from 1998 to 2000 at the Lietuvos žemės ūkio universitetas .

From 2000 to 2003 Bastys was a member of the Šakiai Council. From 2000 he was a member of Seimas , from 2005 Minister Advisor at the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania and from 2006 Advisor to the Lithuanian Prime Minister. As of 2008 he was a member of the Seimas again and held the post of Parliamentary Vice-President for a few months from 2016 to 2017. In spring 2017, impeachment proceedings were initiated against Bastys in the Seimas. In December 2017, the Lithuanian Constitutional Court found that Bastys had seriously violated his oath of office by concealing his relationship with a former KGB employee when he requested access to classified information. The impeachment proceedings then failed, however. However, shortly thereafter, after the announcement of protests, Bastys announced his resignation from his parliamentary mandate. He was still in parliament until March 20, 2018. In July 2018, he announced that he would run again in the by-election for his vacant parliamentary directorship, this time as a non-party candidate. He reached the second round of the 2018 elections, but the conservative local politician and lawyer Irena Haase lost .

Until his resignation from his parliamentary mandate, Bastys was a member of the Lietuvos socialdemokratų partija .
