Minera Escondida is a Chilean copper mining company headquartered in Las Condes .
The company operates two open-cast mines, Escondida and Escondida Norte , in the Antofagasta region , which primarily produce copper . It is one of the largest companies in Latin America . According to company information, Mineras Escondido owns the world's largest copper mine (2010).
history
In October 1978 the American J. David Lowell proposed the exploration of the porphyry copper deposits between Chuquicamata in the north and El Salvador in the south of the Atacama Desert . The two companies Utah de Chile Inc. and Getty Mining (Chile) Inc. founded a joint venture in 1979 . On March 14, 1981 the workers encountered a copper-bearing layer 52 meters thick with a copper content of 1.51 percent in the last planned well, Pozo 6, at a depth of 240 meters . Additional boreholes and a shaft were sunk to isolate the deposit and to take additional samples.
The project started in August 1988. In order to get to the copper ore, 180 million tons of overburden were moved. The first ore was processed on November 3, 1990 and delivered at the end of the year. The official inauguration of the Escondida opencast mine took place on March 14, 1991.
Ownership structure
Minera Escondida is 57.5 percent owned by the Australian-British company BHP Billiton , 30 percent by the British company Rio Tinto , 10 percent by the Japanese company JECO Corporation and 2.5 percent by the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
