List of domestic dogs

The Miniature American Shepherd (also Miniature Australian Shepherd , casually "Mini-Aussie" - although this is not considered a recognized breed) is a dog breed from the USA recognized by the FCI . The breed was listed by the AKC starting May 9, 2011 for possible recognition in its Foundation Stock Service and was inducted into the Miscellaneous Class on June 27, 2012 . On July 1, 2015, the AKC was finally recognized and accepted into the Herding Group .

Origin and history

The breed emerged directly from the Australian Shepherd , actually even in parallel. Throughout the history of the Australian Shepherds, small (under 18 "/ 45 cm) dogs have been found in documents and photographs. Large stock farmers preferred a larger dog for their larger cattle. Some owners and breeders continued to want the smaller Australian Shepherd.

In 1968, the "Little Aussies" by Doris Cordova in Norco in were US -Bundesstaat California rediscovered. Doris Cordova's most famous dog Cordova's Spike was passed on to Bill and Sally Kennedy to further develop the breed line . At that time, Chas Lasater des Valhalla Kennels also started breeding Miniature Australian Shepherds. Cordova, Lasater, and the Kennedys jointly formed the first club for the breed.

Since the 1980s the dogs can be registered with the National Stock Dog Register . In the US there were two specific registers for Miniature Australian Shepherds:

  • Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA - MASCUSA
  • The Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of America - MASCA

In May 2011, the AKC added the breed to its Foundation Stock Service under the name Miniature American Shepherd for future recognition . The North American Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of the USA (NAMASCUSA) was renamed the Miniature American Shepherd Club of the USA upon admission . In 2011 he became the parent club of the AKC. The Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of America (MASCA) and some other clubs have not yet followed this name change. The Miniature Australian Shepherd Club of America neither breeds Miniature American Shepherds nor does it plan to have its breed recognized in the AKC.

In May 2019, the Miniature American Shepherd was recognized nationally by the German VDH. The Club for Australian Shepherd eV ( CASD ) has agreed to look after the Miniature American Shepherd under the provisions of the VDH and is therefore the only club in Germany that has a recognized stud book for the Miniature American Shepherd .

In September 2019, the Miniature American Shepherd was provisionally recognized by the FCI .

description

The only difference to the Australian Shepherd is the size. While the shoulder height ( withers ) in the Australian Shepherd is between 46 and 58 cm, in the Miniature American Shepherd it is 33–43 cm for bitches and 35.5–46 cm for males . Like the Australian Shepherd, the breed comes in many colors : Black, Blue Merle, Red, Red Merle. All color variations can have white and / or copper colored markings.

It is also important to mention that there is a difference between the Miniature Australian Shepherd and the Miniature American Shepherd. The "Miniature Australian Shepherd" is not an officially recognized breed and can still be crossed with the Australian Shepherd, while the "Miniature American Shepherd" is internationally recognized and is bred according to stricter rules.

Essence

The Miniature American Shepherd is a friendly, adaptable dog. It learns quickly and is also suitable for various dog sports ; for example, he successfully takes part in agility tournaments and herding trails .

Breed specific diseases

As with Collies, the MDR1 defect occurs more frequently in this breed , which causes hypersensitivity to several drugs. Other hereditary diseases affect the eyes: These include the Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), cataract and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
