Minister of Māori Affairs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Minister of Māori Affairs is the Minister of the Government of New Zealand responsible for affairs of the New Zealand indigenous people, the Māori . The current incumbent is Pita Sharples from the Maori Party .

The Minister of Māori Affairs plays a slightly different role than other New Zealand ministers. In addition to the supervision of his Ministry Te Puni Kōkiri , (English: Ministry of Māori Development), he also has competencies in the areas of responsibility of other ministries, insofar as they concern the Māori. For example, the involvement of the minister in the development of guidelines for teaching the language of the Ministry of Education would be expected, although otherwise education policy falls exclusively within the competence of the Ministry of Education.

history

Before the self-government of New Zealand, Māori affairs (particularly the acquisition of Māori lands by the Crown) were the governor-general's affairs .

The office was originally called the Minister of Native Affairs or Native Minister for short . Most of the early incumbents were not Māori, although there was an agreement that Māori should sit in the cabinet (though not necessarily as ministers).

It was not until the eighteenth Minister of the Liberal Party , James Carroll , who took office in 1899, that Māori was. Another important Māori incumbent was Apirana Ngata , also a liberal. Most of the ministers remain pākehā , although they regularly used Māori as advisors. Maui Pomare from the Reform Party and Eruera Tirikatene from the Labor Party are examples of such politicians who played an important role in the ministry without holding office themselves. After Caroll and Ngata, the next incumbent of Moral descent was Matiu Rata (33rd minister, term of office 1972-1975).

Today, the major parties use Māori as spokespersons for Māori matters and, if possible, ministers. The Labor Party had Māori in that role continuously since the 1970s, and the National Party had both Māori and Pākehā. The spokesman for the National Party on Māori Affairs is Georgina Te Heuheu , who took over the post of Associate Minister of Maori Affairs with the fifth government of the National Party in November 2008 .
