Miriam Eschkol

Miriam Eschkol ( Hebrew מרים אשכול; * 1929 in Bacau as Miriam Zelikowitz; † November 26, 2016 in Jerusalem ) was an Israeli librarian , social activist, and wife of Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol .

Life

Eschkol was born as Miriam Zelikowitz and emigrated with her parents from Romania in 1930 to what would later become Israel , where she lived in Tel Aviv and Ramat Gan . She had been a member of the Palmach since 1947 and served in the Israeli army during the Palestine War .

She later moved to Jerusalem and studied English literature and history at the Hebrew University and was a research fellow at the University's Department of History. From 1956 she worked as a librarian in the Knesset library.

She became the third wife of Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eschkol , whom she married in 1964. During the Six Day War she was his personal secretary. After his death in 1969, she administered his estate and initiated and headed the Yad Levi Eshkol , an organization for the preservation of the memory of Levi Eschkol , until 2008 .

Eschkol was president of the Association of Women Academics in Israel and on the board of directors of the Israel Museum .
