Miriodor is a Canadian AvantProg - fusion band from Montreal . She has released eight albums since 1986 and combines progressive rock , jazz and elements from chamber and folk music in her almost exclusively instrumental music .

Band history

Miriodor was founded in 1980 by Pascal Globensky ( keyboards , acoustic guitar) and the multi-instrumentalist François Émond (keyboards, violin , clarinet , flute ) in the city of Québec . The band grew up with Rémi Leclerc (drums), Sabin Hudon ( saxophone ), Denis Robitaille (electric guitar, bass, vocals) and Marc Petitclerc (keyboards) to a sextet approach and published in 1986, the self-produced vinyl - LP Rencontres self-published. The cassette Tôt ou Tard was also released in 1986 . It consisted of pieces in sextet and quartet formation, the former appeared in 1998 as a bonus title on the CD re-release by Rencontres , the latter in 1993 on the CD Miriodor .

In 1984 Globensky, Émond, Hudon and Leclerc moved to Montreal , and Peticlerc and Robitaille left the band. After Émond had also withdrawn in 1987, the remaining trio released the LP Miriodor in 1988 with Cuneiform Records and in 1991 3è Avertissement / 3rd Warning .

Electric guitarist and bassist Bernard Falaise joined the band around 1994 and has been on all releases since the album Jongleries Élastiques (1996), and since Mekano (2001) Nicolas Masino has also been involved on bass and keyboards. Also since Jongleries Élastiques different guest musicians have been involved in Miriodor's albums, on Parade (2005) for example the Swedish accordionist and keyboardist Lars Hollmer , whose band Samla Mammas Manna participated in the first Rock in Opposition Festival in 1978.

In 2002 and 2003 Miriodor performed at the North East Art Rock Festival NEARfest in Pennsylvania, USA. In 2002 the recordings for the live CD of the double CD Parade + Live at NEARfest were made .

Style and reception

Dave Lynch wrote on Allmusic : “When Miriodor was founded, they could also be viewed as a North American practitioner of the Rock in Opposition  (RIO) style established by European bands like Henry Cow , Etron Fou Leloublan , Débile Menthol - instrumental progressive rock with the necessary technical skill and virtuosity, but without the pomposity that has pulled down better known prog bands ”.

Achim Breiling wrote on the Babyblauen Seiten about the album Jongleries Élastiques : “You could see the music as a cheerful, jazzy and less neoclassical variant of the RIO chamber program à la Univers Zéro . Miriodor makes music here, lighter in weight and less gloomy than the Belgians, but at the same time a bit brisk and lively. The group unites various rudiments of style - folk-song, jazz, rock, impressionistic-classical and also fair-like elements - to a quite unique, quite complex, dense and demanding, but harmonious and pleasant mixture. Occasional weird and almost violent outbursts and some dark moments are the rare exception to the rule. "

  7. At their inception, Miriodor could also be viewed as North American practitioners of the Rock in Opposition (RIO) style pioneered by such European groups as Henry Cow, Etron Fou Leloublan, Débile Menthol - instrumental prog rock with the requisite technical skill and virtuosity but none of the pomposity that dragged down better-known prog outfits.
