Mirko Novák

Mirko Novák , actually Miroslav Novák, (born July 12, 1965 in Bratislava ) is a German-Slovak Near Eastern archaeologist .

Mirko Novák studied Near Eastern Archeology , Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Islamic Studies at Saarland University from 1985 to 1992 , where he completed an MA thesis on the typology of Nuzi houses . In 1998 he received his doctorate from the Free University of Berlin with a dissertation on the subject of rulership and urban architecture . Since his habilitation in 2004 he was a private lecturer at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen and from 2010 for one year at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In February 2011, he took over a professorship at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences (IAW) at the University of Bern as head of the Middle Eastern Archeology department . Together with Lutz Martin , Jörg Becker and Abd el-Masih Baghdo, he leads the excavation in Tell Halaf as well as the excavation in Sirkeli Höyük with Ekin Kozal (until 2014) and Deniz Yaşin (since 2014) . Before that, he worked on the excavations at Tell Šēḫ Ḥassan, Tell Chuera , Tell Šēḫ Ḥamad / Dur Katlimmu and Qatna . Since 2013 he has been co-editor of the journal Altorientalische Forschungen (De Gruyter-Verlag Berlin) as well as the series of writings on Near Eastern Archeology (Harrassowitz-Verlag Wiesbaden) and Orbis Biblicus et Orientalis (Peeters-Verlag Leuven). Since 2015 he has been President of the Swiss Society for Oriental Classical Studies (SGOA).
