Ancient Near Eastern Research (AoF) is a scientific journal in the fields of Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Near Eastern Archeology .

The ancient oriental research was founded in 1974 and published by the Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . Initially, the magazine served to treat all areas of ancient Near Eastern studies and Near Eastern archeology. After the reunification in 1994, there was a reorientation. As the Journal of Assyriology and Near Eastern Archeology one published in Germany magazine was present, mainly to the cultures of Mesopotamia devoted to AoF from now on, especially for the treatment of the cultures should Altanatoliens , but also Old syria and related fields such as Ancient Egypt including of ancient Sudan , the Eastern Mediterranean and Iran . Languages, history, culture and archeology are dealt with. For a long time the publisher was Volkert Haas in conjunction with Manfred Bietak , Helmut Freydank , Karl Jansen-Winkeln , Horst Klengel , Johannes Renger and Werner Sundermann , later Jörg Klinger and Jared Miller . Current editors are Joost Hazenbos , Catherine Mittermayer , Mirko Novák and Claudia Suter . The editorial team is based at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bern , while Sabine Ecklin is the editor-in-chief.

Right from the start, the magazine was published by Akademie Verlag in Berlin , and since 2014 by Verlag de Gruyter. Two issues appear annually, which together form a volume. The main publication languages ​​are German and English, as well as French. Essentially, essays are published. The AoF are not a review body . In exceptional cases, individual issues or entire volumes can be designed as special publications. All four issues of volumes 24/25 (1997 and 1998) were reserved for articles on the 65th birthday of Horst Klengel.
