Mirosław Bałka (born December 16, 1958 in Warsaw ) is a Polish sculptor and video artist who lives and works in Otwock .

life and work

Mirosław Bałka studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw until 1985 . He belonged to the group Neue Bieriemiennost . Bałka has been teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw since 2011 . He is a sculptor, but also active in the field of experimental video and drawing.

In his reduced sculptures and installations made from everyday materials, he revolves around fundamental themes of human existence. He confronts the audience with moments on the border between death and life, with Polish history, the occupation, the Holocaust and his own past.

Works by Mirosław Bałka can be seen at international art exhibitions: documenta IX , Kassel (1992); Biennale di Venezia (1990, 1993, 2003, 2005, 2013), Carnegie International , Pittsburgh (1995), Biennale of São Paulo (1998), Liverpool Biennial (1999), Biennale of Sydney (1992, 2006), Santa Fe Biennial ( 2006).

In 2009 Mirosław Bałka showed the How It Is project as the 10th work in the Unilever series in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Gallery of Modern Art in London.
