Reflections in the water |
The Mirror Lakes are lakes in the region Southland on the South Island of New Zealand . They are located on New Zealand State Highway 94 between Te Anau and Milford Sound south of Knobs Flat .
They are traversed by Black Creek, a snow and rain-fed tributary of the Eglinton River . It is an oxbow of a former river bed of the Eglinton River.
Lakeside living birds such as Australian bittern , New Zealand Fernbird , grebes , Maori duck and Pacific Black Duck , but also introduced to them are competing Mallard . Native fish include the long- fin eel ( Anguilla dieffenbachii ) and the koaro (Galaxias brevipinnis), while rainbow trout and brown trout , which are not native to New Zealand , were introduced into the Eglinton River system for fishing.
The lakes are known to reflect the landscape behind with the Earl Mountains like a mirror in the early morning or evening when there is no wind . The west bank on SH 94 was developed for tourism by the DOC with a parking lane, viewpoints, paths and information boards.
