The Miss Florence Diner is a 1941-built Diner in Northampton in the state of Massachusetts of the United States . description

The Miss Florence Diner is located on Massachusetts Route 9 in the center of the Village Florence's historic business district . The restaurant, built in 1941 as a typical "barrel roof diner", was considerably expanded and remodeled on site by the Worcester Lunch Car Company at the end of the 1940s . The rear of the building is connected to a 19th century building in which the owner family runs a bar and another restaurant.

Originally, the diner had a rectangular floor plan and was free. After the renovation, the restaurant has a much larger area, a cross barrel roof and an L-shaped interior layout. The brick vestibule at the front with a barrel roof was added in the 1950s and its design is very unusual for diners of this era. A covered side entrance is also located in the western part. The diner was only connected to the building much later.

The dinner is standing on a concrete foundation, and is externally with yellow and red Email dressed while the roof with asphalt - shingles is covered. On the roof, along the south and east sides, there is a parapet wall that is unusual for a diner and on which the name of the diner is written in red letters. A large, two-sided sign from the 1940s on the southeast corner of the roof makes the name visible from afar.

The interior of the diner is characterized by the barrel roof and the L-shaped seating, which is followed by the entrance to the restaurant's bar. The surfaces essentially consist of wood, enamel and tiles and have a color scheme of dark yellow, orange, brown and black. 19 bar stools are available at the marble counter. In the vicinity of the main entrance, the course of the cultivation can be traced based on minor changes in the soil pattern.

Historical meaning

The Miss Florence Diner is a very well-preserved example of the various conversions that the manufacturer Worcester Lunch Car Company carried out on dinners that had already been delivered in order to meet changing customer requirements. It has been owned by the Alexander family from the start, and they still run it today along with a bar and restaurant.

In 1941 Maurice and Pauline Florence Alexander opened the Miss Florence Diner named after her after they had sold their previous diner opposite the current location and acquired a new restaurant car. The family lived next door in the house where the bar on the ground floor and the restaurant on the first floor have been since 1959. There is a banquet hall on the second floor .

At the time the Miss Florence Diner opened, Northampton had 31 restaurants, three of which were in Florence. Miss Florence was one of only two diners in town and is the only one left in Florence today.
