Mister Wong was a web portal for social bookmarking in Germany . Since March 6, 2009, Mister Wong has been an independent company. The website, which was previously operated by the media agency Constructiv in Bremen , stopped its social bookmarking functions at the beginning of August 2013 and was then used for other purposes. Since August 2017 it has changed hands again and is now operated by HanseHype GmbH from Winsen (Luhe) .

history

The site started in the spring of 2006 and, according to its own information, had meanwhile over 8 million bookmarks . In January 2007, Mister Wong took over the German bookmarking service taggle . On November 7, 2011, Mister Wong was put up for sale for a new operator. On August 9, 2012, ekaabo GmbH, Weinheim announced the takeover of Mister Wong. On August 1, 2013, the social bookmarking functions were discontinued after a new sale.

According to Alexa , Mister Wong was the 67th most visited website in Germany (as of April 2010). The service was available in German, English, French, Spanish, Chinese and Russian. In 2008 Mister Wong was referred to as an “integral part of the German Internet” and even later it was referred to as the “once most linked side of Germany”.

In 2011, the service was known to 24% of respondents in a survey by the HeBis network (compared to 14% for delicious ).

Functions

Could bookmarks after a free registration on the website of the provider, with a special toolbar that was available as an extension for multiple browsers, or by import function from other social bookmarking SERVICES such as del.icio.us , are created. In addition, some online editorial offices and blogs offered their readers the opportunity to automatically bookmark their articles on Mister Wong.

A user's bookmarks were usually public, but could also be marked private; then they were not displayed to other users. There were also community services that gave users an insight into the user behavior of other members (see also Folksonomy ). Tags could be assigned to the bookmarks ; users could network with each other to keep track of their respective bookmarks, and they could also send messages to each other via the platform. You could also create a user profile. Bookmarks on a specific topic could be collected in groups.

Since November 2010, Mister Wong has offered the option of uploading documents or files in various formats such as PDF documents or presentations. Uploaded documents could be given their own license, rated, commented on and (optionally) downloaded by other users.

criticism

American users accused the German operators of the portal of racism . In May 2007, excitement was raised about the former logo with an illustration of a Chinese man with a pear-shaped face, a bald head and a broad grin. Ernie Hsiung, a blogger with Asian ancestry, was outraged by the clichéd portrayal of the Chinese . The advertising slogan "ping pong, king kong, Mister Wong", which had been valid until then, was also criticized.

Mister Wong founder Kai Tietjen apologized on the portal's official blog. In December 2007, a new logo was introduced, selected from the results of a competition with a vote of Mister Wong users, a jury and finally Mister Wong employees.
