Social bookmarks

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Social bookmarks (seldom also in the translated form: "social bookmarks" ) are internet bookmarks that are stored jointly by several users on a server on the internet or in the intranet so that they can jointly access them in order to exchange bookmarks with one another. By default, the service is accessed via a web browser ; For some services there are also special browser extensions to make them easier to use.

In this respect, one also speaks of joint indexing of Internet sources. So-called social bookmark networks are usually used for this purpose, primarily to collect links and news reports .

Provider and features

The largest providers in the English-speaking area include Delicious (formerly del.icio.us ), Digg , folkd and StumbleUpon . There are also purely German-language services, such as B. LinkArena , Oneview or BibSonomy . Mister Wong , who in addition to the German-language interface also offered its services in other languages, discontinued the social bookmarking functions on August 1, 2013. The German representatives who have specialized in “bookmarking” news include ShortNews , Webnews and YiGG . In addition, smaller portals such as scoop.at in Austria have also developed in German-speaking countries , which deliberately focus on country-specific news.

Users can add, delete, rate, comment or add categories or keywords (English tags ) to their own bookmarks . You also have insight into other users' bookmarks, which can be added to your own collection. Depending on the service, social bookmarks can be listed and searched for by keywords, keyword combinations, categories or users. In many cases, there is also a list of the last bookmarks saved by all users on the start page, as well as a list of the most popular links. Each of these lists can be tracked using a web feed . Most providers of social bookmarks offer a list of thematically related links or related tags. Further functions, which are not available from all providers, are group functions, e-mail and network functions between individual users, import and export of bookmark files, as well as toolbars and search extensions for various browsers.

Open source solutions

There are a number of open source solutions for social bookmarks that can be installed on your own server, e.g. B. Unalog , Connotea , Scuttle or Pligg . A bookmarking service can also be created with the CMS Joomla .
