Wrist warmers , hand cuffs or mitaine are items of clothing that partially cover the hand and often taper to a point on the back of the hand. It is a mixture of arm warmers and gloves . The garment has its origin in women's clothing of Burgundian and Gothic fashion. Under the name Mitaine [ miˈtɛn ], the French word for a glove that leaves the fingers uncovered, they emerged in the 14th century as an accessory in women's fashion. A tapered shape was preferred because it stretches the hand optically and makes it appear narrow. They were also valued in the Biedermeier period . Over time, they were worn separately as wrist warmers. They can also be found as part of traditional costumes .

In terms of shape, the gauntlet of medieval armor should also be mentioned, which was primarily used for protection. They were made from leather , metal scales, or chain mesh.

During the First World War, women and girls were asked, among other things, to knit wrist warmers for the troops in the course of war relief in Germany.

Forms and Uses

Pulse warmers can be designed as cut-off finger gloves such as. B. with sailing gloves or cycling gloves , if a warming and / or protective effect is desired, but the activity requires free mobility of the fingers. Finger-free gloves are also used for other sporting activities, such as bodybuilding or gymnastics . Musicians also use gloves when performing outdoors in cooler temperatures, which release their fingers and do not restrict fine motor skills, which is why softer materials such as wool are preferred.
