The Commonwealth type is a Liberty replacement ship type , which was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in the mid-1960s as a replacement for the then aging fleet of Liberty freighters and Victory ships .

details

In the second half of the 1960s, various types of ships were offered around the world as replacements for the Liberty and Victory standard freighters still in service, as well as some other cargo ships built during the Second World War, in the world merchant fleet at that time, which were on intermediate decks with their own loading gear and approx. 14,000 tons load-bearing capacity oriented. Series such as SD-14 , Freedom and German Liberty were particularly successful .

The Commonwealth ship type was developed by Mitsubishi in the mid-1960s as one of three slightly different Liberty replacement ship types (the other two were the slightly larger MM-14 type and the Seatramp type ).

The Commonwealth ships had five holds with a volume of 20,583 m³ (bulk cargo) or 19,299 m³ (general cargo). All cargo holds were in front of the superstructures, which were arranged completely aft, the rear four had an intermediate deck. Nine hatches and ten loading booms as well as two cranes were available on the ships as their own loading gear for cargo handling.
