The Mitsui Concord 18 is a Liberty replacement ship type , which was developed in the mid-1960s by the Japanese Mitsui shipyard as a replacement for the then aging fleet of Liberty freighters and Victory ships and was built by several Japanese shipyards from 1968 onwards.

history

In the mid-1960s, around 700 of the Liberty and Victory standard freighters, as well as a few other cargo ships built during World War II, were still in service in the then world merchant fleet. Even the youngest of them were now 20 years or older, and so both the shipping companies and the shipyards were faced with the question of replacing these ships, which would soon reach the end of their service life.

The great upheavals in maritime shipping, caused by the appearance of container ships and bulk carriers , which would later almost completely replace the general cargo ships , were not foreseeable as such at this point in time, so that the classic general cargo ship , which was in its form at the time since the turn of the century, was relatively few changes was built, still appeared up to date. The Japanese Mitsui shipyard also oriented its plans for the Concord 18, like many other shipyards with their successful type ships SD-14 , German Liberty , Trampko , Seebeck 36L , to intermediate decks with their own loading gear and around 14,000 tons of load capacity. This conservative design was undoubtedly also due to the fact that most of the Liberty and Victory ships still in service at that time were operated by rather small shipping companies with limited resources. In the course of the construction period, the carrying capacity of the Concord ships was increased again.

The first ship of this type, the Sylvia Cord , was launched on March 2, 1968 and was handed over to its new owner, Concord Line (a subsidiary of the Lauritzen shipping company) from Copenhagen on May 29, 1968 at Osaka Zosenho in Osaka .

The German shipping company DDG "Hansa" acquired six identical ships from the Greek shipowner Michael A. Karageorgis, who had a large number of Concord ships built, in 1974/75. After being taken over by DDG “Hansa”, these units were converted into heavy lift ships or 924 TEU full container ships of the F-class .

technology

The ships have four holds with seven hatches and a volume of 21,474 m³ (bulk cargo) or 19,724 m³ (general cargo). The holds are suitable for the transport of heavy loads. As own loading stood default eleven derricks with 5 to 15 tons of capacity available, there were during the series, however, numerous other variants with conventional derricks, heavy lift , Stülcken-Schwergutgeschirr built, or cranes. In addition, existing ships were converted into heavy lift ships or container ships.

The main propulsion of the ships consisted of a seven-cylinder Mitsui / B&W diesel engine that acted directly on a fixed propeller. In the beginning the type 7-62VT2BF-140 with around 8400 HP was used, later the 1000 HP more powerful Type 7 K 62 EF with a speed of 144 revolutions per minute each. There was no bow thruster .
