The Mittelbünden region ( Rhaeto-Romanic Regiun Grischun Central ) is a regional association in accordance with Articles 69 and 72 of the cantonal constitution of the Canton of Graubünden . There it is declared a corporation under cantonal public law with its own legal personality. Its validity is of unlimited duration.

The regional association comprises 21 communities in Surmeir with the subregions of Oberhalbstein , Albulatal and Lenzerheide . The Churwaldnertal municipalities of Churwalden , Malix and Parpan (since January 1, 2010 a unitary municipality of Churwalden) have joined the regional association of Northern Grisons despite their geographical affiliation to central Grisons .

The tasks of the Mittelbünden region are to look after cultural issues such as maintaining the Mittelbünden music school, networking ecological and economic thinking such as setting up Parc Ela, and maintaining German-Romance bilingualism in the municipal and district councils.
