Middle-earth: Shadow of War is an action role-playing game developed by Monolith Productions . Its content is based on the Lord of the Rings license and is the sequel to Middle-earth: Mordor's Shadow, which was released in 2014 .

action

The game is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and takes place after the predecessor Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor . Talion is still connected to the spirit of the elven blacksmith Celebrimbor , who at that time made the One Ring for Sauron , which enabled him to become the dark lord. Now Celebrimbor has created a new ring of power, with the aim of becoming a mighty king through it. Talion, however, shows little interest in power, but he supports Celebrimbor in preventing the newly awakened Sauron and his dark army from annealing Middle-earth. To do this, Talion must raise an army of orcs to face his enemy in Mordor .

Development and release

In late February 2017, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced the title Middle-earth: Shadow of War , which ties in with the story of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor . The title should be available in Europe on October 10, 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in stores. Distribution is via Steam or Microsoft's Play Anywhere for the Xbox version. Optimized versions for PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox Scorpio are also planned.

Shadow of War appears in four different editions. In addition to the Standard Edition, there will be a Silver, Gold and Mithril Edition, which, in addition to a copy of the game, contain many other content such as access to upcoming expansions.

Controversies and even calls for boycotts were triggered by the microtransaction system, with which allies can be acquired for the final battle of the game by means of so-called loot boxes without the need for time-consuming recruiting and training. This would bypass the hassle of building a personal orc army and reduce the time it takes to get to the final sequence. This sequence closes the story logically and is therefore an essential part of the narrative, can only be achieved with difficulty without investing in time or currency, in-game or in real life.

According to Monolith producer Michael de Plater, developing Mordor's Shadow for the studio was more of a fundamental work on how to make open world games and was therefore relatively limited in scope. With the experience gained, it was now possible to plan bigger for part 2 and to realize a big blockbuster, as originally pictured, better. In this part, the single player experience should give way to the epic battle feeling, as you know it from the films of the main series. With the technique of Shadow of War , large-scale battles are possible, some of which are fought by the previously recruited followers, so that the player can throw himself into the middle of the fray. In addition to the violent scenario, attention was paid to a bit of humor to loosen up, to offer a contrast to the bloodlust of the orcs and to make the game not seem too bloodthirsty.

Gameplay

As in the previous version, the so-called nemesis system also plays a central role here. The protagonist Talion can draw his enemies to his side through the abilities of the elf lord Celebrimbor and thereby cause unrest and revolts in the army of Sauron. This time the system includes more than just the captains and chiefs of the orc army, other henchmen can also be recruited, who in turn should show behavior based on the decisions of the player. In addition, the aspect should also increasingly focus on an action RPG in order to create a more individual experience for the player than in the first part. The gameplay video published in early March 2017 shows a battle for an orc fortress, which is said to be generated differently depending on the personality and tribe of the fortress overlord. This affects the appearance as well as the type of defenses and the tactics required for conquest.
