The low mountain range near Johanngeorgenstadt is a Natura 2000 area in the west of the Erzgebirge district .

The 467 hectare low mountain range near Johanngeorgenstadt consists of various forest and open land areas. This low mountain range has typical habitats, with some very valuable, sometimes very species-rich mountain meadows, borst grass lawns and heather areas, the moors have different characteristics, still and flowing waters and of course have different forest communities such as spruce-beech forests, montane spruce forests and spruce and pine bog forests. The area consists of six sub-areas: Friedrichsheider high moor - Riesenberger houses , Hinterer Märzenberg - Rote Grube , upper reaches of the Schwefelbach , Steinbach - Sauschwemme , Teufelssteine - Himmelfahrt, meadow slope on Külliggutweg.
