The Miyagase Dam ( Japanese 宮 ヶ 瀬 ダ ム , Miyagase damu ) is a dam on the Nakatsu , an important tributary of the Sagami in Aiko County in Kanagawa Prefecture on Honshū Island in Japan . The reservoir lies on both sides of the border between Kiyokawa , the city of Aikawa and the former city of Tsukui (now the Midori district of the Sagamihara city ).

Building history

The Sagami River's hydropower potential began to be developed in the 1930s when industry and electricity consumption began to grow in the Yokohama - Kanagawa industrial region. Construction of the Sagami Dam , the first dam on the Sagami, began in 1938, but lack of funds and the start of World War II delayed completion until the end of the war. The construction of the Shiroyama Dam was completed in 1965. The growth of population in nearby Atsugi and the increased demand for industrial water and drinking water suggested plans for more dams on the tributaries to Sagami on. Plans for the Miyagase Dam were completed in 1969 and work began in 1971. Due to the size of the structure and because around 300 households had to be relocated, construction was not completed until 2000.

Structure and use

The Miyagase Dam is an internally hollow gravity dam of concrete. It was designed and built by a consortium of Kajima Construction , Ōbayashi Gumi and Toda Corporation . The dam is a multi-purpose facility. In addition to providing flood protection, it provides 90% of the tap water for two-thirds of the population in Kanagawa Prefecture, including the cities of Kawasaki , Yokohama and Yokosuka . It also supplies the Aikawa hydropower plant, which has a nominal output of 24 MW.

The 156 m high dam is the second highest in the Kantō region . The Miyagase Reservoir, which it dammed, is a popular resort in Kanagawa Prefecture. The dam and reservoir can be reached via national road 412 .
