Mkalama is a district in the Singida region in the central part of Tanzania . The administrative center is Nduguti . The district is bordered to the north by the regions Simiyu and Arusha , in the east on the region Manyara , in the southeast of the district Singida , south to the district Ikungi and on the west by the district Iramba .
geography
Mkalama has an area of 3366 square kilometers and around 190,000 inhabitants (2012 census). The land lies at an altitude between 1000 and 1500 meters above sea level. Most of the rivers are temporary, the largest being the Sibiti on the northern border. He is the outflow of Kitangirisees and empties into the Lake Eyasi . The climate in Mkalama is a local steppe climate, BSh according to the effective climate classification . The precipitation of 500 to 850 millimeters per year falls mostly from mid-November to mid-May. From June to October it hardly rains. The average daily temperature varies from 15 degrees Celsius in July to 30 degrees in October.

The district was created in 2012 through the division of the Iramba district.

populationThe largest ethnic groups in the district are the Nyiramba, Nyisanzu, Nyaturu, Sukuma , Barbaigs and the Hadza . The population decreased from 253,933 in the 2002 census to 188,733 in 2012. That year almost two-thirds of the over-five-year-olds spoke Swahili, six percent spoke English and Swahili, and thirty percent were illiterate. Facilities and services |
- Education: In 2013, 38,000 students attended 81 primary schools, one of which was privately run. Of the 21 secondary schools, 20 were public.
- Health: There is a hospital, four health centers and 28 pharmacies (as of 2020) to provide medical care for the population.
- Water: Around forty percent of households get clean water within a 400 meter radius. A little more than a fifth are more than a kilometer from the water.

In Mkalama, a district council is elected every five years. The council consists of 14 elected members, four women in special seats for women and one representative who represents the district in the national parliament.
