Moazagotl

Lenticular cloud

Moazagotl is the name of a formation of lenticular clouds in the Giant Mountains , which provided the impetus for research into the phenomenon of lee waves . A glider of Wolf Hirth was named after it in 1933, the phenomenon was studied in detail.

The name is traced back to a shepherd named Gotthelf Motz (in Silesian "Moatza Gottl") or Gottlieb Matz ( Matz'ens Gottlieb ), who often observed and described these clouds on the northern edge of the Giant Mountains. The special thing was that the cloud was often seen as "standing" near Hirschberg in the Giant Mountains (today Jelenia Góra , Poland).
