Stefan Štiljanović

Stefan Štiljanović ( Serbian - Cyrillic Стефан Штиљановић ) was the last head of the Paštrović clan from the Bay of Kotor region in today's Montenegro , who moved to the region around Syrmia in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary at the end of the 15th century and later became a Serbian despot in what was then Kingdom of Hungary in the regions of today's western Vojvodina and eastern Slavonia in today's Croatia rose. He is still a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church , whose bones are buried in the Saborna Crkva in Belgrade . His year of birth is unknown; the year of death is assumed to be 1543.

In his new home he proved himself to be an excellent voivode . He successfully fought several battles against the advancing Ottomans, was also taken prisoner, but was released again for a ransom because he was very wealthy and respected. Around the year 1520 he founded the Kuveždin Monastery in Fruška Gora , where the book Panagirik from 1545 is kept today, which is the oldest written testimony to his status as a saint.

In the region around the Šišatovac monastery in Fruška Gora , a real cult around his person and his military successes arose during his lifetime. After his probably violent death, according to historically not verifiable tradition, his widow Jelena Štiljanović founded the Petkovica monastery in Fruška Gora with the inherited property . Then, according to legend, she entered the monastery as sister Jelisaveta and, like her husband before, was canonized by the Serbian Orthodox Church after her death.

The holiday of St. Stefan Štiljanović and the venerable Jelisaveta is celebrated on October 17th according to the Gregorian and on October 4th according to the Julian calendar.

To St. A chapel near Osijek from the 19th century was consecrated to Stefan Štiljanović , but it was destroyed by Croatian armed forces in the Croatian-Serbian civil war in Croatia from 1991 to 1993 .
