prehistory

In CE 71, during the last days of the war, Orb Island is attacked by the Earth Alliance. While the fight for the island is raging, the civilian population tries to flee on the ships that are ready for evacuation in the port. The then 14-year-old Shinn Asuka tries to escape with his parents and sister, but when Shinn's sister falls the cell phone out of her pocket, Shinn runs to get it. But then there is another explosion, causing Shinn to pass out and when he comes to, he sees his family lying dead on the floor.

Main storyline

Two years later, in CE 73, during the visit of Cagalli Yuula Attha, the new representative of Orb, to a space colony, the three prototypes ZGMF-X24S Chaos Gundam, ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam and ZGMF-X88S Gaia Gundam became the new second Generation Gundam Mobile Suits stolen. The thieves are the three Extended Stella Loussier, Sting Oakley and Auel Neider.

Shinn Asuka, who went to PLANT after the death of his family, joined the ZAFT army and is stationed on the space station in question on board the new combat ship Minerva. With the help of his ZGMF-X56S Impulse Gundam, which is also a prototype, he saved Cagalli and her bodyguard Alex Dino (alias Athrun Zala), who had fled to a ZAKU, from being killed by the three Gundams. However, the thieves managed to escape, so the Minerva was commissioned to bring the three Gundams back. During their search, however, it happens that fanatical supporters of Patrick Zala divert parts of the destroyed planning colony Junius 7 so that they threaten to fall to earth. PLANT and the Earth Alliance want to prevent this and PLANT sends troops to destroy Junius 7. Among them is the Minerva, whose team wants to save the world together with the exposed Athrun Zala. But the plan fails and although parts of Julius 7 can be destroyed, several cities on earth are destroyed by rubble.

The Earth Alliance gives PLANT responsibility for this and declares war with the aim of destroying the space colonies and all coordinators. While the Minerva is being repaired in Orb, Shinn meets a girl named Stella (in episode 21) during his shore leave, whom he saves from drowning when she falls from a cliff into the water while singing and dancing, without knowing that she is belongs to the thieves. In the evening, Stella is picked up by Auel and Sting (two of their comrades-in-arms) and Shinn goes back to the Minerva. A plot in the government that makes Orb an ally of the Earth Alliance against the wishes of Cagalli, the Minerva is forced to leave Orb's waters. As soon as she is outside the territory of Orb, she is attacked by an Earth Alliance fleet. The ship hardly has a chance against new weapons from the Earth Alliance and in the desperate situation Shinn discovers his SEED and can still defeat the fleet.

There are still encounters with the Earth Alliance and Minerva, who are trying to escape superiority. Orb also attacks the Minerva. The Archangel crew tries to mediate and end the fighting. When they intervene for the first time, however, this leads to the death of the FAITH member and new Mobile Suit pilot, the Minerva, Heine Westenfluss. His death confirms Athrun, who has meanwhile become a FAITH member and pilot and who had rejoined ZAFT, in his decision to help Minerva. The ZGMF-X23S Savior, also a new Gundam, was made available to him by PLANT Chairman Gilbert Dullindal. Some time passed and Minerva was commissioned to investigate a former laboratory of the Earth Alliance more closely and found records of experiments with biological computers, so-called extended ones. It only feeds Shinn's hatred of the Earth Alliance and Blue Cosmos. While the laboratory continues to be explored, Stellar is on his way there in her Gaia. Athrun and Shinn catch her and overwhelm her mobile suit. Then Shinn discovers that the pilot is Stella. She is taken to the Minerva's infirmary, where she receives medical help, but is also held because she is to be explored as an Extended Version.

Then there is another fighting between Minerva and the naval forces of the Earth Alliance. In battle, Abyss is destroyed and his pilot Auel is killed by Shinn, who also destroys almost the entire fleet of the Earth Alliance and Orb. Athrun's Mobile Suit is so badly damaged by Kira that it can no longer be repaired. It then emerges that Stella will soon die because, in the Extended Version, she needs a certain drug to live that she cannot get on the Minerva. So Shinn frees her and brings her back to the Earth Alliance. Stellar's supervisor, Neo Lorrnoke, meets with Shinn and promises to fire Stella from military service because he wants her to have a happy life. After his return to the Minerva, he is pardoned by Chairman Dullindal and does not have to fear disciplinary proceedings.

Despite the agreements, he meets Stella again in the fight for Berlin, in which she controls the powerful Mobile Suit Destroy, which he wants to destroy. Now Shinn hesitates, but when Stella sees Kira, whom she has been warned about by Neo, she attacks him out of desperation. But Kira can destroy her mobile suit and she dies. Shinn can still confess his love to her and swears vengeance on whoever killed her. So he trains for the near future until he meets Kira again in Scandinavia, whose ship Archangel is now one of the enemies. Finally Shinn succeeds in defeating Kira's Mobile Suit Freedom after a long fight. When Athrun sees his friend Kira defeated, he doubts the path he has taken.

Kira survives the destruction of the Freedom and is rescued by Cagalli and the Archangel crew. Shin and Rey have since received two new mobile suits from Dullindal, the ZGMF-X42S Destiny Gundam and the ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam. Athrun decides to leave ZAFT again and flees together with Meyrin in a zaku, which helped him escape. However, they are intercepted by Shinn and he destroys Zaku. The two survive and are taken in by the Archangel. There Athrun meets Kira again.

Because Martin DaCosta discovers records in a destroyed colony that speak of the so-called Destiny Plan and with this information arrives at Lacus and Commander Waltfeld on the Ethernal. He is pursued by ZAFT and the Ethernal is now attacked. Kira, worried about Lacus, sets off into space in the Strike Rouge. There he joins the Ethernal in the fight against Zaft and receives a new mobile suit, the ZGMF-X20A Strike Freedom Gundam. With it he destroys 25 mobile suits and only needs 2 minutes. While on Earth, Orb is attacked by ZAFT and the Minerva to bring down Lord Djibril. Kira comes in Strike Freedom, together with Lacus in the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam to help the Archangel in battle and saves Cagalli in the ORB-01 Akatsuki.

Lord Djibril escapes, however, and then starts an attack on the PLANTS with the help of the super weapon Requiem. With it he destroys several PLANT colonies with one shot. With several stations it was possible for the weapon to bend its beam and fire from the back of the moon. ZAFT is now using all means to destroy this weapon and its stations to bend the beam. The Minerva and her crew are able to take control of the Requiem and kill Djibril.

After Djibril and the Earth Alliance are defeated, Dullindal explains the goal of the Destiny Plan. All people should be given the perfect future based on their genes. But this would also restrict the free will of every human being. Opposition to this plan quickly gathers, sometimes even as far as the PLANTS, and so there is a final fight in which Dullindal not only uses the super weapon Requiem, but also a new GENESIS weapon. Nevertheless, the alliance of the three ships and their allies manage to defeat the ZAFT around Dullindal.

The epilogue of the series shows how Lacus Klein as the leader of ZAFT and Cagalli Yula Attha as the representative of the earth begin joint talks. Shin Asuka meets Kira in Orb and Athrun can finally break his grudge against Orb.
