The Open ModPlug Tracker , originally ModPlug Tracker , is a music tracker for Windows . It is one of the most famous and widely used trackers. The British Computer Music Magazine named the MPT in 2007 as one of the top 5 free music trackers.

history

ModPlug Player , Windows Mod-Player developed by Olivier Lapicque on the basis of his ModPlug Browser Plugin

The program was originally developed by Olivier Lapicque on the basis of the ModPlug browser plug-in and the ModPlug player , which limit the playback of modules. The first version appeared in September 1997 , making it one of the oldest pure Windows trackers. Older known PC trackers, such as the FastTracker or Impulse Tracker , were still designed for MS-DOS . In 2004, Lapicque put the source code under the GPL and thus enabled further development under the name OpenMPT . The Schism Tracker is another tracker based on the ModPlug code. As part of this project, many bugfixes were made to the ModPlug library, which were later incorporated into OpenMPT ( backport ). From version 1.17.02.53 the OpenMPT is under the BSD license .

Technical characteristics

In contrast to most other trackers, the ModPlug Tracker uses the functions and GUI elements of the WinAPI for its graphical user interface . It has the standard Windows look and feel , which makes its operation more intuitive than the rather playful in-house designs of other trackers, which are often still based on trackers from the DOS era.

As one of the first trackers, it supported the parallel opening and editing of several modules. Up to 127 channels are supported at the same time, VST plug-ins (also VST instruments) can be used and there is ASIO support.

The program can import about two dozen different module formats , it can save the formats MOD , S3M , XM , IT and its own file format MPTM . Exports of modules in various stream formats ( WAV , FLAC , Opus , Vorbis , and with an appropriately installed encoder also MP3 ) are possible.

libmodplug and libopenmpt

The library libmodplug was originally split off from the ModPlug Tracker in order to be able to use the playback routine of the tracker under Linux , for example as a plug-in for XMMS to play music modules. In some Linux distributions (e.g. Debian ) the plug-in is pre-installed as a standard package.

However, since the libmodplug library has only received a few updates in recent years, the libopenmpt library has been published, which is being further developed in parallel with OpenMPT. On the basis of this library, for example, player plug-ins for XMPlay , Winamp and foobar2000 were developed, which can be downloaded from the official website.
