The Extended Module ( XM ) is a file format for music data that has been created with a tracker . The file format was introduced with Fasttracker II. It allows instruments with volume and panning - envelopes and a simple sample compression.

In contrast to Protracker's MOD format, the XM format is not precisely documented in important details. Programmers of playback programs often looked at the source code of other playback programs.

Some computer games from Epic Games such as Unreal , Unreal Tournament or Ion Storms Deus Ex used u. a. the XM format, encapsulated in a "UMX" container format supported by the Galaxy Sound Engine .

tracker

Modern trackers that can not only read the XM format, but also save it, are z. B. the Milky Tracker , BeRoTracker or the Mod Plug Tracker .
