Model European Union

Model European Union (MEU) is a series of simulations of the European Union that brings young people from numerous countries together to learn more about EU legislation. They take on various roles for several days, such as those of European parliamentarians and ministers in the Council of the European Union .

MEUs are now held annually in various locations across Europe. The most famous simulation should the Model European Union in the best European Parliament in French Strasbourg be. There are also simulations as the MEUM in Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz , Belgrade Model European Union in Serbia Belgrade , the Polish capital Warsaw , or MEUALB in Albania .

The Model European Union in Strasbourg

One of the first MEUs was the MEU in Strasbourg, which usually takes place annually in spring (March, April or May). There the participants not only take on the roles of European parliamentarians and ministers in the Council of the European Union , but also of journalists , lobbyists and interpreters ,

Model European Union (MEU) is a week-long simulation of European politics and the European legislative process. Usually two suggestions for guidelines and regulations are discussed, given by the organization team.

During the simulation, the participants discuss, debate and negotiate these proposals, trying to reach a compromise and successfully adopt it. In doing so, they follow the same procedures and procedures as the actual European parliamentarians and ministers.

Legislative proposals 2012

The following legislative proposals were negotiated at the MEU in 2012:

  • Proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union on the use of a passenger name register for the prevention, detection and prosecution of terrorist activities and organized crime.

The proposals will be dealt with in the ordinary legislative procedure and the consultation procedure.

Location

MEU takes place annually on the premises of the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The organization team provides two inexpensive hotels for participants and helpers near the Louise Weiss building, the seat of parliament.

Organization team

The organizational team consists of around 70 young people from a large number of different countries. It is compiled anew every year by the respective general manager and his deputy. Among other things, so-called Country Liaison Officers are selected for each European country to conduct public relations and fundraising on site.

Model European Union is a project by BETA eV (Bringing Europeans Together Association). The association appoints the general director every year and accompanies the preparation and implementation of the simulation.

Bringing Europeans Together Association eV is a European, politically independent non-profit organization that advocates European integration and international exchange. The association was founded in August 2008 in Mainz. In addition to MEU Strasbourg, the MEU Mainz association organizes and supports simulations across Europe such as Belgrade Model European Union and MEUALB in Albania.
