The annual conference Model United Nations of Lübeck (MUNOL for short) is a so-called simulation congress that brings students from all over the world closer to the goals of the United Nations and introduces them to the way it works. The young people from different countries slip into the role of delegates from the countries assigned to them, whose political positions they then represent at this conference. The idea of recreating international organizations with pupils and students goes back to the 1920s. There are now different Model United Nations (MUN) all over the world , each with a different focus and target groups.

The congress in Lübeck , which is entirely organized by students, is held entirely in English and thus enables young people of different nationalities to take part. In the one-week event, in addition to the General Assembly , the Security Council , the Economic and Social Council and the Human Rights Council as well as other United Nations bodies are simulated. MUNOL is one of the oldest English-speaking conferences in Germany and now has more than 20 years of experience.

The organizers of MUNOL have set the following three main goals for the conference:

  1. Introduce the participants to the goals, opportunities and challenges of the United Nations.
  2. Contribute to international understanding by bringing together young people from all over the world.
  3. Train English language skills, especially for use in political and business environments.

Participants and venue

MUNOL is aimed at students from all over the world. Compared to many other MUN in the Federal Republic of Germany this is a special feature, since most of these conferences are organized for students. In recent years, young people from Sweden , Finland , Turkey , Italy , Poland , the Netherlands and many other European and non-European countries have taken part in the MUNOL Congress . Over 450 people were involved every year. Since the first conference in 1998, the main venue for MUNOL has been the Thomas Mann School in Lübeck.

organization

The Model United Nations of Lübeck is organized and hosted exclusively by students. The organizational team, which is put together every year, is divided into two main areas of responsibility. While the "Conference Management" deals with administrative and organizational tasks, the " General Secretariat " coordinates the content of the conference. This area of responsibility includes the research and preparation of information on topics of international politics as well as the selection and preparation of the chairmen of the committees.

MUNOL eV

In 2003, members of previous organizational teams founded the non-profit MUNOL eV to create a more stable legal basis for the conference. First and foremost, however, the association provides ideal support for the conference, for example by working out rules for holding the conference, ensuring the annual election of a subsequent conference leader and evaluating the week of the event. In addition, the association represents an alumni network for former conference participants.
