The Modern Woodmen Park is a minor league baseball stadium in Davenport , Iowa , USA and host the home games of the baseball team Swing of the Quad Cities .
history
The stadium was built in 1931 with the name Municipal Stadium . On May 27, 1971, it was renamed John O'Donnell Stadium in honor of the recently deceased sports journalist John O'Donnell . The second name change took place on December 12, 2007. Since then, the stadium has been named Modern Woodmen Park , after the Modern Woodmen of America organization , which is based in Rock Island . The contract with Modern Woodmen of America runs for 10 years.
In addition to the baseball games, the stadium was mainly used for high school football of the Catholic private university Davenports and Saint Ambrose University until 1987 . On May 10, 1991, it was the site of the boxing match between Michael Nunn and James Toney for the IBF middleweight title.
When the Mississippi flooded , the baseball encounters had to be held in different stadiums again and again. During the 1993 flooding in Davenport, known in the USA as The Great Flood , the images of the flooded playing field in Modern Woodmen Park became a symbol of the floods. In the course of the extensive renovation in 2004, an approximately 3 meter high berm was built, which not only serves as a seating area for spectators, but also as a dam against flooding. After the renovation, the stadium had 4,024 seats and has been a modern ballpark ever since.
In the entire minor league game, only Centennial Field in Burlington is older than Modern Woodmen Park.
