The term modus operandi ( Latin : “type of action” or “type of implementation”) is a Latin phrase used to refer to the manner in which an actor proceeds , acts and becomes active.

Criminology

In criminology, modus operandi describes the behavior of a perpetrator that is expressed in the course of the crime . In particular, it reveals which methods the perpetrator needs to successfully carry out the offense or to obscure the offense. Although it is of great importance for criminal tactics, the "modus operandi system" is based on theoretical assumptions that have since been refuted. (see also perpetrator profile )

sociology

In sociology is the modus operandi in the habit concept of Bourdieu a central point. According to Pierre Bourdieu , the habitus has a double function in socialization in that it generates forms of practice (“modus operandi”) and appears as a form of practice (“modus operatum”). The "modus operandi" produces forms of practice as well as patterns of perception, evaluation and thought that can be empirically analyzed as finished products, the "opus operatum".
