Moe Island is an island in the Archipelago of the South Orkney Islands .

geography

The irregularly shaped island is 1.5 km long and 1 km wide. They are separated from the southwestern end of Signy Island by the 310 m wide Fyr Channel . In the north and south-east the island rises steeply to the highest point, the Snipe Peak . Three rocky headlands extend to the northwest and delimit two bays, Landing Cove and Richardson Cove .

The nearest research station is the British Signy station , which is about 3 miles to the northeast.

environmental Protection

Moe Island and the rocky cliffs immediately in front of it form the specially protected area ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area ) No. 109 according to Appendix V (Protection and Management of Areas) of the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty . The aim of protection is to maintain the ecosystem of up to two meters thick turf mats and the colonies of chinstrap penguins , Kapsturmvögeln and pigeons storm birds . An increasing number of Antarctic fur seals populate the shores of Landing Cove .

Moe Island is designated as an Important Bird Area (AQ020) by BirdLife International .

history

The Norwegian whaling captain Petter Sørlle mapped them between 1912 and 1913. He named them after Magnus Thoralf Joachim Moe (1878 – unknown), another whaling captain from the Norwegian Sandefjord , who operated at the same time as Sørlle in the waters around the Southern Orkney Islands.
