The Hahnenschweifwida or Hahnenschweifweber ( Euplectes progne ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of fire weavers ( Euplectes ).
features
The cock's tail wida is 19–21 cm tall and 33–46 g in weight; with the unusually long tail in a magnificent dress , it reaches 50–71 cm. The female is smaller and lighter. The bird has a strong, conical, brightly colored bill, black eyes and ocher legs. The male has an orange-red shoulder. In the magnificent dress, the head, chest, stomach and coat are colored black. In a simple dress , like the female, he wears a striped brown-ocher-colored plumage, a light stripe over the eyes and black tail feathers. Young animals do not yet have shoulder stripes and are light on the belly.
distribution and habitat
Cock-tail widas are common in Africa and can be found in short grasslands at altitudes between 1800 and 2800 m.
The following subspecies can be distinguished:
- E. p. delamerei ( Shelley , 1903), circumscribed in the highlands of Kenya
- E. p. delacouri Wolters , 1953, in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Angola and in the west and north-east of Zambia
- E. p. progne ( Boddaert , 1783), in the southeast of Botswana , in the east of South Africa , in the west of Swaziland and in Lesotho
- E. p. ansorgei Neumann , 1908
nutrition
Rooster-tailed wida feed on grass seeds, such as millet (Setaria sphacelata), dallis grass (Paspalum dilatatum and Paspalum distichum) and pennon cleaner grasses .
Reproduction
The breeding season is in Angola in February, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between December and April, in Zambia between April and May and in Kenya between November and January.

The cock's tail wida is not considered endangered ( Least Concern ).
