Mohamed Aly El-Erian (born August 19, 1958 ) is a former CEO of the Pacific Investment Management Company (PIMCO).

Life

Mohamed A. El-Erian earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Cambridge University in 1980 . He obtained a Masters degree from Oxford University in 1982 and a PhD in 1985 . He began his professional life in 1983 at the International Monetary Fund in Washington , where he worked for 15 years. After two years with Salomon Smith Barney in London , he moved to PIMCO in 1999 . From 2004 to 2007 he was the managing director of Harvard Management Company , which manages the foundation assets of Harvard University . In December 2007 he moved again to PIMCO, where he took over as CEO.

On January 21, 2014, he announced that he would be leaving PIMCO in March 2014. He will remain a member of the International Executive Committee of the parent company Allianz and act as a consultant.
