Mohammad Shafi Qureshi

Mohammad Shafi Qureshi (born November 24, 1929 in Srinagar , † August 28, 2016 in New Delhi ) was an Indian politician . He was co-founder of the Congress Party in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir and several times deputy minister and minister of the Indian central government as well as governor in four Indian states.

Life

Qureshi attended Christian Mission Elementary School, then Hadow Memorial High School and Sri Amar Singh College in his hometown of Srinagar. In the 1950s he then studied law at Aligarh Muslim University . He then began a career as a lawyer admitted to the Jammu and Kashmir High Court .

Qureshi was also politically active early on. He was one of the founders of the Congress Party in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. In 1965 he was elected to the Rajya Sabha , the second chamber of the Indian parliament , for the state . In 1971 he was elected to the first chamber of the Lok Sabha parliament for the Anantnag district . From 1966 to 1969 Qureshi was Deputy Minister for Trade, from 1969 to 1971 Deputy Minister for Steel and Heavy Industry and then until 1977 Deputy Minister for Railways. In 1977 he became Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation and held this position until 1979.

From 1991 to 1993 Qureshi was governor of Bihar and during that time took over the post of governor of West Bengal twice on an interim basis in 1992 . From 1993 to 1998 he was governor of Madhya Pradesh and during this time took over the office of governor of Uttar Pradesh twice, in 1996 and 1998, also on an interim basis .

Qureshi was married and had two sons and two daughters.
