Mojave Trails National Monument
The Mojave Trails National Monument is an American national monument in San Bernardino County in southeastern California . It was designated by President Barack Obama by a Presidential Proclamation on February 12, 2016 with an area of 1,600,000 acres (6,475 km²). The Mojave Trails National Monument is located in the Mojave Desert . The Mojave Trails National Monument is bordered to the north by the Mojave National Preserve and to the south by Joshua Tree National Park . The National Monument includes land owned by the US government around the almost untouched Cadiz Dunes. In the reserve there is a mosaic of rugged mountain ranges, ancient lava flows and spectacular sand dunes. 350,000 acres were previously designated as Wilderness Area . The National Monument is overseen by the Bureau of Land Management .
Human traces in the protected area
The Southern Pacific Company's first transcontinental railroad runs through the Mojave Trails National Monument . A 105 mile unaltered stretch of Route 66 between Ludlow and Needles runs through what is now the sanctuary. There are former US Army training camps of George S. Patton from the time of World War II in the desert area. The largest military training camp in the world was located in the Desert Training Center on the Mojave Trail . More than a million soldiers trained at Camp Ibis , Camp Clipper , Camp Iron Mountain , Camp Granite, and Camp Essex from 1942 to 1944 . The soldiers trained here to fight against Erwin Rommel's troops in North Africa .
