The Molfsee is a lake in Schleswig-Holstein and is located south of the city of Kiel in the Molfsee municipality of the same name . The Molfsee was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, the Vistula Ice Age . Since the end of the Ice Age, the lake has slowly silted up, and three islands have formed in it, the largest of which is called the Seagull Island .

The island got its name from the black-headed gull , which breeds here with around 1000 breeding pairs from mid-April. In the meantime there is also a growing colony of gray and Canada geese . While the islands used to be used to collect seagull eggs, they are now a protected area and are not allowed to be entered.

In winter, the island is a popular place for ice skating, but the lake has become rarer in the last few decades.

In the east the lake is bordered by the town of Molfsee, in the south by the Streitberg.
