Molodaja Gwardija ( German  Young Guard ) is the youth organization of the Russian party United Russia .

history

The movement was founded in April 2000, named after a Soviet resistance organization during World War II. In November 2005 it was renamed the Young Guard of the United Russia to better distinguish it , and popular celebrities from the media were installed at its head among the Russian youth of that time. In 2010 she made international headlines when the former Russian agent Anna Chapman took on a managerial role in the organization . In 2011 the Young Guard numbered 100,000 members between the ages of 15 and 30.

In 2012 United Russia used representatives of the Young Guard around the then chairwoman Aljona Igorewna Arshinova to rejuvenate its otherwise rather outdated Duma faction. The chairman of the Young Guard has succeeded Rudnew Maxim in 2014, Denis Davydov. Especially since the demise of the further government-affiliated association Naschi , which was dissolved in 2013, the Young Guard has played a central role in recruiting young people for members of the government loyal to the government in Russia and is intended to improve the image of the next generation of government officials abroad through a more "moderate" appearance as Naschi. In May 2018, numerous press reports circulated that the Young Guard was being used on the streets against actions by opposition activists Sergei Stanislawowitsch Udalzow and Alexei Anatolyevich Navalny . However, these reports were denied by the chairman of the Guard Dawidow.

Content profile

In contrast to the more aggressive Naschi, the association appears more cautious and tries to introduce academically educated young adults loyal to the government to the ruling party with appropriate events, for which it uses its huge financial power compared to other Russian youth associations. You do not have to be a member of the mother party to be a member of the Young Guard. The demands are also suitable for young people, such as those for free WiFi access at all Russian universities or after the renovation of student dormitories at the beginning of the 2010s.

Criticism / scandals

In 2010 the Young Guard came under fire after the journalist Oleg Kashin, who was critical of the government, was badly beaten by strangers. A website of the organization had previously called for him to be "punished".

In 2013, the Young Guard was accused of systematically distributing political spam e-mails in order to disrupt opposition activities in Russia.

In 2016, Der Spiegel reported that the Young Guard had formed an alliance with the right-wing Junge Alternative für Deutschland , the youth organization of Alternative für Deutschland . However, the Young Guard then denied this alliance both on their homepage and in an interview by their chairman Dawydow with the German-language online newspaper Russland.ru .
