Momba is a district of the Songwe region in Tanzania with the administrative center in the city of Tunduma . The district borders in the north on Lake Rukwa , in the east on the districts Songwe , Mbozi and Ileje , in the south on Zambia and in the west on the Rukwa region .

geography

The district has an area of ​​4571 square kilometers and around 300,000 inhabitants (as of 2012). The land lies at an altitude of 900 to 1750 meters above sea level and consists of two zones:

  • Plain: It connects to the Rukwasee in the north and covers most of the district.
  • Highlands: In the south the country rises gently undulating, in the west in a steep step of the East African Rift Valley.

The drainage takes place in the Rukwasee, the largest river is the Momba , which forms the northwest border. The climate is largely tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The annual average rainfall is between 1350 and 1550 millimeters, most of it falls from November to April. Especially the months June to September are very dry. The average temperature on the plains is between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius, and significantly lower in the high altitudes.

The district was created in 2012 through the division of the Mbozi district. In 2015 Tunduma was promoted to city council.

The largest ethnic groups in the district are the Nyamwanga , Nyiha, Sukuma , Lambya and the Ndali . The population rose from 164,756 in the 2002 census to 294,380 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of six percent. Almost half of the over-five-year-olds spoke Swahili in the country , around five percent Swahili and English. In the city of Tunduma, around a fifth spoke English and only 13 percent were illiterate.

  • Education: There are 104 elementary schools and 17 high schools in the district.
  • Health: A hospital, a health center and five pharmacies are available in the city of Tunduma to provide medical care for the population. There are three health centers and thirty pharmacies in the country.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Around 80 percent of the population depend on agriculture. Arable farming is mainly carried out by small farmers. Almost half work with hand hoes, around forty percent with animal power and only ten percent with tractors. Maize, beans, rice, millet and sweet potatoes are grown for personal use, and sesame, rice, sunflowers and vegetables are sold to increase income. In rural areas, almost 100 percent of households keep farm animals, most commonly cattle, chickens and goats (as of 2012).
  • Forestry: The district has 114,000 hectares of natural forest. Lumber is felled and beekeeping is carried out in them.
  • Trade: Tunduma is a trading city that does a lot of trade with Zambia in particular.
  • Railway: Tunduma is the border station of the TAZARA -Eisenbahnlimie from Dar es Salaam to Zambia. The express train runs weekly and takes 25 hours for the 990 kilometers from Dar es Salaam to Tunduma (as of 2020).
  • Roads: The T1 national road runs through the district from Dar es Salaam to Zambia. Of the approximately 1,000 kilometers of roads in the district, 100 kilometers are paved and 160 kilometers are gravel. The remaining roads are dirt roads.

In Momba, a district council and a town council are elected every five years. Adrian J. Jungu chairs the district council and Ally Robern Mwafongo in the city council (as of 2020).
