Mompati Merafhe

Mompati Sebogodi Merafhe (born June 6, 1936 in Serowe , Bechuanaland ; † January 7, 2015 ) was a lieutenant general and politician of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) from Botswana , who was commander of the Botswana Defense Force between 1977 and 1989 , several times a minister and in 2008 was Vice President until 2012.

Life

Merafhe became the first commander of the Botswana Defense Force in 1977 and held this position for twelve years until he was replaced by General Ian Khama in 1989.

In 1989 he was appointed Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration in his cabinet by President Quett Masire and held this office until he was replaced by Ponatshego Kedikilwe in 1994. He then succeeded Gaositwe Kogakwa Tibe Chiepe as Foreign Minister and held this ministerial office also in the subsequent government of President Festus Mogae until 2008. His successor as foreign minister was then Phandu Skelemani .

Merafhe himself succeeded Ian Khama as the new Vice President of Botswana on April 1, 2008 and held this position as Deputy Ian Khamas, who was now President, until his replacement by Ponatshego Kedikilwe on July 31, 2012.
