The Monatsschlössl, also Waldemsschlösschen, is on the Hellbrunner mountain in the park of Hellbrunn Palace in the southern Austrian city of Salzburg situated hunting lodge of the 17th century, where a museum is housed today.

history

Based on the family of the builder Markus Sittikus von Hohenems , it was originally called Waldems-Schlösschen . It is related to the two small castles, " Emslieb " and " Emsburg " on Hellbrunner Allee. Allegedly it was built in just one month during a transit of the Teutonic Order Master Archduke Maximilian of Austria (1558–1618), a son of Emperor Maximilian II. This legend could be refuted by historians insofar as the construction took significantly longer than a month.

The castle, probably built in 1615, was once aligned with the center of the princely mannerist castle garden (water parterre), which was originally designed in the form of an ornate strawberry mountain rising between the geometrically arranged water basins. This "mountain" with its "Turkish strawberries" was a symbol of joie de vivre and stands as a counterpoint to the very similarly built second palace in the palace park, the no longer preserved Belvedere palace in the former sacred part of the park.

From 1920 to 1924 the bird museum of Eduard Paul Tratz was located in the building . From this emerged in 1924 with the move to the Hofstallkaserne - the cavalry barracks, which was to be converted into the Great Festival Hall in 1957 - the Museum for Performing and Applied Natural History as the forerunner of the later House of Nature .

Today the rich folklore museum of the Salzburg Museum is set up in the monthly castle . The collection, founded in 1904, provides an insight into the Salzburg folk culture with exhibits of customs , popular piety, living culture and folk medicine. The traditional costumes typical for Salzburg districts are also shown.

From the monthly castle there is a view of the gardens of Hellbrunn Palace.
